Happy Halloween! Although I love the fun festivities of Halloween, as a dentist I struggle with the candy and sweets that go with the holiday. Not only is the candy bad for your teeth, I end up eating out of my children's Halloween bag! I would love to make some fun suggestions for this Halloween and the sweets that come with it.
1. Many dentists have a buy back program. If your child brings in a bag of candy, they get $1.00 per pound for example.
2. This year, I am sending most of my childrens trick or treat candy overseas to one of our friends that is serving in Iraq. I thing this is a great opportunity to teach your child many values and at the same time save his or her teeth! I feel that I am teaching my children how to share, show appreciaton and support for our troops defending our freedom, and instilling them that moderation of candy consumption is better than volume! They will savor the sweetness in small doses!
3. We are going to the dollar store and handing out trinkets instead of candy.
4. If you must hand out candy, make sure to buy something you and your kids do not care too much for so that you will not want to consume the leftovers!
5. The most important suggestion to follow is have fun with your children! We all had a great time last year celebrating the spooky fun with our children and hope to do the same this year. We all had candy in moderation! Don't you just love these healthy happy ghoulish smiles!
