Feeling Good for All the Firsts!

Feeling Good for the First Haircut Her first haircut
Happy Friday!  What a busy weekend we had at the Smith house.  We celebrated four huge milestones. My six month old crawled for the first time, my one and a half year old got her first haircut, and my six year old son lost a tooth (a baby top front tooth) and had a visit from the Tooth Fairy the same night the Easter Bunny came to visit us.  If you follow my blog regularly, you already heard about the dilemma.  My son was worried because he thought the Tooth Fairy and the Easter Bunny would run into each other and would become scared.  Thank you bloggers for all your feedback and ideas.  I started this blog to provide a resource to parents out there and you actually have provided me a resource for advice as well so thanks!

I wanted to take this opportunity to show you what my stylist, and now my daughter's stylist, did to help her feel comfortable with the salon and getting a haircut.  Ms. Ann at Outside New York in Homewood, Alabama, spent one hour with my daughter.  She started by playing on the floor with her to make her feel more comfortable.  As you can see, she ended up with a hairdo masterpiece and a child that already loves going to the salon!
I think Ms. Ann at Outside New York Salon completely understands the psychology of making a child feel comfortable with a new experience.  You might have read in one of my previous blogs that dentists recommend bringing your child to a general dentist or pediatric dentist to just see and "play" in the office.  We have our staff show the child around and get accustomed to what we do  This way, a child's first experience with the dentist is a happy one and not a terrifying experience when they come to us for treatment (extraction or restoration).
As with anything in life, doing something for the first time or being in an unfamiliar environment can cause some anxiety.  Do what you can to help your children have an enjoyable experience with unchartered territory such as a first dental visit or haircut.  Take them on a fun trial run!
